Brick Rehabilitation Printer Friendly version of this page

Street Prior to Repair

The City of Columbus has a small amount of brick streets that are some of the oldest streets in the community.  Originally, when streets were constructed with brick pavers, materials and labor were relatively inexpensive.  As the City began to grow and technology changed, the traditional methods of road construction shifted towards asphalt and concrete.

Over time, problems begin to occur with brick streets, such as, base failures and brick deterioration.  Base failures are due to larger vehicle loads, repeated freezing and thawing of moisture within the pavement, and a breakdown of the subbase.  The structural breakdown of the paver occurs when the rate of deterioration begins to crack and spall the brick.

Street Following Repair

Today, the City of Columbus spends a portion of its maintenance budget on maintaining the existing brick streets and repairing the deficiencies as part of a yearly brick rehabilitation contract.  Due to the high costs of labor and the fact that most of the work is done by hand, the City can only repair a fraction of the brick streets in the city.

The program is comprised of a field investigation to locate areas that are beginning to show base failure, rutting, brick cracking and spalling. Once these areas are located, a contract is assembled and bid to a contractor to perform the work.
