Do Not Block Intersections

Across central Ohio, you will see “Do Not Block Intersection” signs. But did you know that it is illegal to block any intersection in Ohio? Signs are placed where intersection blocking is frequently a problem to remind drivers of the law.

Ohio Revised Code says:

No driver shall enter an intersection or marked crosswalk or drive onto any railroad grade crossing unless there is sufficient space on the other side of the intersection, … to accommodate the vehicle... without obstructing the passage of other vehicles… pedestrians, or railroad trains…

What exactly is “Blocking the Intersection?”

Don't Block the Intersection!

In this example, the traffic signal has just switched. The red cars tried to catch the tail end of a green or yellow light and have entered the intersection when there was no room to make it completely through. This prevents the blue cars from moving forward on their green light. This violation of the law jams traffic and increases the chance of an accident. No driver should enter an intersection unless he or she is certain there will be room to clear the intersection.

Emergency Vehicles: Help Save Lives, Do Not Block Their Way

The above scenarios become more serious if vehicles blocking intersections prevent fire, Emergency Medical Service or Police vehicles on emergency runs from quickly and safely passing through intersections. An emergency vehicle blocked at an intersection for even a few seconds may be the difference between life and death for someone in need of their help.

So help keep central Ohio safe and don’t block intersections!
