The Department of Public Service provides the following transportation services within the City of Columbus:
  • Coordination of road and highway design and construction as well as bridge repair, design and construction
       

  • Maintenance of city streets, highways, alleys and bridges includes paving and surface treatment programs, snow and ice control, pothole repair, street sweeping, catch basin cleaning and repair, guardrail repair; mowing, planting and vegetation control of rights-of-way and graffiti removal on public right-of-way such as bridges and overpasses  
       
  • Maintenance of city map and address information and certification of city street addresses
       
  • Permits (City Codes 910, 903 and 905):
    General or special use of right-of-way permits;
    Street, sidewalk and right-of-way excavation and occupancy;
    Sidewalks (new and replacement);
    Driveway approach (new and replacement);
    Commercial approach (new and replacement);
    Oversize load permits: annual, 90 day, or one-time move permits;
    Curbs

  • Street Name and Traffic Signs
  • Pedestrian Crosswalks & Street Markings
  • Traffic Calming
  • Traffic & Pedestrian Safety

  • Provide quality inspection to ensure the citizens of Columbus receive a completed project built in accordance to plans and specifications.

For after-hour traffic emergencies that require immediate attention (such as a signal not operating), call (614) 645-7393 or 645-4545.

Major traffic changes such as installation or removal of traffic signals, creation of permit parking areas, one-way streets and traffic-calming measures are reviewed at monthly public meetings by the Columbus Transportation and Pedestrian Commission. The commission consists of seven voting members and up to four advisory members. It acts as an advisory board to the Mayor, City Council and the Public Service Director on significant traffic issues.

Meetings are held the second Thursday of each month at 3:30 PM, normally at 109 North Front Street. Public comment is welcome. Call (614) 645-7881 for locations and agenda items.
